PROJECT OBJECTIVES:
STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS AND DESIGN OF A 4-STOREY LIGHT WOOD-FRAME MULTI-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL COMPLEX IN NORTHERN CANADA, FOUNDED ON PERMAFROST SOIL CONDITIONS. THE SCOPE INCLUDED GRAVITY AND LATERAL LOAD DESIGN, FOUNDATION COORDINATION, AND PREPARATION OF PERMIT AND CONSTRUCTION-READY STRUCTURAL DOCUMENTATION UNDER CHALLENGING CLIMATIC AND LOGISTICAL CONSTRAINTS.
PROJECT SOLUTION:
THE SUPERSTRUCTURE, INCLUDING THE ELEVATOR SHAFT, WAS DESIGNED PREDOMINANTLY IN WOOD, WITH A SINGLE STEEL GIRDER LOCATED IN THE MECHANICAL ROOM. A COMPREHENSIVE FINITE ELEMENT ANALYSIS (FEA) MODEL WAS DEVELOPED, WITH EVERY STRUCTURAL STUD EXPLICITLY MODELED TO ACCURATELY REPRESENT REAL BUILDING BEHAVIOR.
THE ANALYSIS VERIFIED GRAVITY LOAD PATHS, LATERAL STABILITY UNDER WIND AND SEISMIC ACTIONS, STOREY DRIFT PERFORMANCE, PILE REACTION FORCES, AND FOUNDATION CAPACITY.
PROJECT PARAMETERS: 4 STOREYS, ~45,000 SF GROSS FLOOR AREA, 98 STEEL PILES EMBEDDED INTO BEDROCK, 424 HOLD-DOWNS IN THE LATERAL SYSTEM. ~3-MONTH DESIGN DURATION.
